Great Week 6/20/14 -6/30/14) with friends, Doug and Sharon

Finally Time to Enjoy Our Cabin After the Big Clean-up

It was no easy task saving our boat and dealing with the enormous heap of pilings, wood and roofing materials piled on the beach from the demolition of our pier and boat lift.  All of it was destroyed by ice.
Thank you Ron Mason for helping Gary chainsaw the last of the pilings.
Second pile to be removed

Previous to our friend's visit, our lab Jake was neutered.  We waited till he
was almost a year old to ensure good bone development.  Jake looked
pathetic with his head collar, but he adapted quite well to the humiliation
of bumping into walls and miscalculating doorways.

With the clean-up completed, it was time to celebrate!! We thoroughly enjoyed
Doug and Sharon's visit.
Doug is an amazing cook!

Our kind of breakfast!

Good to the last drop.

Thank you, sharon, for helping with weeding.

Canandaigua Civic Center Art Show, Macedon Book Store, Winter 2014

I'm Up and Running Again!

It's been over a year since I have posted, so it's about time I bring this blog up to date!  I'll start with this month, April 2014, and work backwards.

Last weekend Gary and I went to the Civic Center Art Show on Apr. 26 to see an old friend who drove in from New Jersey for the event. We have been friends with Michael Olugbile for over 25 years.  He is both a ceramic artist and teacher, whom I first met when I invited him to do a clay workshop with my students. We have stayed in touch with him and his family over the years, and I am his daughter's Godmother. Michael's work is unique in technique, form and personal expression.  Some of his work embodies his Nigerian roots.

Friend, Nancy, joined Gary and I for dinner
with Michael at Rio Tomatlan in Canandaiqua

Before going to the art show I stopped at Books, ETC to hear my friend, Eileen Loveman, discuss her books.  I haven't seen Eileen for quite some time so it was good to catch up.  I also was introduced to Larry Weill who's had some unique experiences.  He was a wilderness ranger who lived in a tent in the Adirondacks for three years and wrote some books from his observation of hikers and campers.  One titled Excuse Me, Sir...Your Socks are On Fire seems like it will have some insights on wilderness mishaps. I've linked some of his other books on sale at Amazon.

Books, ETC is a haven for me.  It's the ETC part of Books, ETC that makes it far and above more than a book store. The owner, John Cieslinski, is a diamond chiseled from his personality, wisdom, and wicked sense of humor.  I love talking to John and spending time sitting in the cozy gathering room behind the sales store front. John promotes writers and offers some unique topic events, such as Abundance Theory and Support Group, Journaling for success, Psychic Night, Readers Theater,  Healing Circle, and many more. Be sure to stop in and visit the store at 78 W. Main St. in Macedon.

Winter 2014

This was a winter to remember!  Luckily, Gary and I, and our black lab puppy, Jake, escaped to Atlanta and Cape San Blas Florida for three months.  And luckier than that, we arrived in Atlanta the day BEFORE the historic ice storm that crippled Atlanta for a week.  We were there to visit my son and family.  Our son, unfortunately, got stuck in the disaster trying to come home from work.  He had to abandon his car to get help and didn't get home until 10 PM. He had left work at 1 PM.

April 2014 Our Grandkids

We had a New Year's Day at our house
with friends Sandra and Richard

We had one of the best vacations ever in Cape San Blas, which has a dog friendly beach. It was our first time there and we were thrilled with the relaxing nature of the area.  It was not congested and had quaint areas and some wonderful dining.  The charming fishing town of Apalachicola was twenty minutes away.  We discovered a great place to board Jake when we wanted to spend time with our friends, Doug and Sharon, exploring the great dune beaches in the many state parks or going out to dinner. We went to the Sunset Coastal Grill in Port St. Joe to celebrate Gary's 70th birthday.  Gary certainly doesn't look that old.

Doug and Sharon shared our fantastic beach house for two weeks.  The beach house was huge with three wrap around porches.  There were many nights with beautiful sunsets and morning rainbows.
Jake loved every minute there, running on the beach, swimming in the surf and playing with Doug and Sharon who love dogs.  Doug, who is a photographer took some superb photos.  Sharon collected unique shell fragments to use in her jewelry creations and I collected anything that could inspire paintings.  Now I just have to paint some!  I had every intention to start when we got back home, but the ice storm destroyed our covered dock at our cabin,  We have spent many weeks trying to get help to remove that behemoth structure.  Everyone is busy since there were so many docks destroyed by the
ice , below 0 temps, winds and heavy snowfalls.  Gary and I took on more work days to help pay for it.
Supposedly, we are retired!!  Ha Ha. Guess again.  Life also snuck in some really serious heartaches far and above the dock problem. This too shall pass as my Mother used to say.

Here is a photo of our destroyed dock and boat lift.  Winter 2014 was brutally cold.  Keuka Lake was totally frozen. The 2 ft. of ice destroyed many docks when it started to melt.

Anna participated in a 5K race.  Super job Anna!

YEAR 2013

Gary and I spent the winter in Atlanta, Naples Fla, and visiting cousins Dick and Marsha
at The Villages. We also spent a week with Erik and Emily and the G'kids in Disney World Fla.

This is what we left!

Gary did a commissioned bird carving.  A change of pace
from his usual work...a little whimsy requested.

During the Summer we spent time at our cabin between rentals
and enjoyed time with friends.  A special treat for Gary was
fishing with a sweetie, appropriately named Heavenly.
Our daughter, Michele spends a lot of time with her.

In Sept 2013 we bought a puppy who was born July 4th.
Jake was a water baby from the moment he stepped into the lake!

Happy New Year 2013

2012

This year was a great year for us.  I didn't do too
much writing, but did do illustrations for two books.
I substituted at Pal Mac three to four days a week
and my favorite place was (and still is) the Middle
School. Yes, I am crazy to love those whacky, dramatic,
noisy kids.  Gary and I drove down to Atlanta three
times and will be making another visit soon.

I had my 50th high school reunion, had some decent
tomatoes from the garden and terrific beets.  Gary and
I stayed very active going to the gym (doesn't look good
for 2013 however), maintaining the upkeep of our cabin
and helping our daughter with a kitchen remodel.
Michele and I added more to our laugh journal--we both
break each other up.

I reunited with some childhood friends and met many giving,
supportive people who have enriched my life.

My goals for the new year include finally working on some
old manuscripts to try and publish, traveling to Costa Rica or
Italy, enjoying my grandchildren, and remaining grateful for
all that I have.

Here are a few memories from 2012:

Jennifer Burrows

Promoting a Friend's New Book

Congratulations, Jennifer!  I'm finally getting
around to posting your book on my blog.  I was part
of seeing the progress of this book from idea to
publication.  Jennifer and I are critique buddies, even
though it has been many, many, many months since
we have been active critique members.  Life is too busy
to devout time to everything important in one's life.
But, today is the day I devout to updating my blog.
It's about time, since Jennifer's book was released by
Royal Fireworks Press on Sept. 11, 2012 - a timely date
since this chapter book tells the story of one girls emotional
growth as a result of the 9/11 terrorist attack on the
twin towers.

Read about this book on the Royal Fireworks website
and visit Jennifer Burrow's blog site devoted to her
critique of children's literature.

Rosalie Gabbert

Mr. Bee Man

Rosalie and I have collaborated on a children's
picture book, Mr. Bee Man. It will be published
by Outskirts Press and be released soon.  This
non-fiction account of Lorenzo Lorraine Langstroth
life, will endear readers to this gentle man who struggled
with illness, yet persevered in his study of the honey bee
to invent a bee hive that revolutionized the way honey
is harvested.  Langstroth loved to tell a good story and
introduce children to nature.  His life is inspiring to
readers of all ages.

Rosalie's husband was a beekeeper, so she was intent
on creating a book as a legacy to his life.  We both
did extensive research for this book.  I was in contact with
Matt Redman, a Langstroth historian and beekeeper who
provided me with numerous resources to help me envision
the vibrant life of Philadelphia in the early 19th century,
the place and time of Langstroth's life.  I really enjoyed
doing the illustrations for this book because I love drawing,
so chose to do a lot of line work in addition to washes.
Matt Redman also operates a handcrafted soap business
with his wife.  His bee hives are an integrated part of his
business.

Here are some images from the book:

George Brummell

The Mole and the Violin

I am currently completing illustrations for
George Brummell's children's chapter book.
Each chapter will feature a full page charcoal
drawing.  George contacted me to do the
illustrations and since that time he has become
a dear friend.  We have spent a lot of time
discussing his vision for the book, talking about
our lives and our work and sharing humor and
stories. I have yet to meet him in person,
but plan to this summer.  I live in NY and he and
his wife live in Maryland.
From The Mole and the Violin Chap.5

I have great respect for George Brummell.
He was blinded in the Vietnam War and yet
has adapted with remarkable courage and
service to others.  He chronicles his experience
in Vietnam and his growing up years in
Shades of Darkness.

Read about this inspiring memoir on his web site.

Trip to Lincoln, Nebraska
Summer 2012

Gary and I visited my brother, Robert and family
(sister-in-law Jessie, neice Kady and nephew Chris).
My brother Greg flew in from Las Vegas for the reunion.
Even though it was over 105 degrees every day we
were on the go touring Lincoln, going to museums and
visiting the University of Nebraska where my brother
teaches. We loved going to to Elliot's birthday party
(Chris and Jenny's first baby).  Thank you all for a
wonderful time!
